祈願妳們都像聖母一樣聖潔！
舒伯特(Franz Schubert)1828年完成《Ave Maria》
(萬福馬利亞，又稱為「聖母頌」)這首名曲。
每當聆聽到這首名曲時，就會令人感到如置身於聖城之中，
充滿聖潔與平安的氛圍。
名歌唱家Johann Michael Voge赴奧地利，
他與Voge在奧國各地旅行演奏，直到當年10月底才回國。
當他剛結束半年的奧國巡迴演奏後，
有感於旅遊途中天地之美與蘇格蘭詩人Walter Scott 的敘事詩
《湖上美人,The Ladrofthe》，極為讚嘆，
於是取該詩篇做了兩三首寶石般的小曲，其中之一就是依據 “Ellen’s third song” 所寫的《Ave Maria》。
敘述詩的內容是描述著，在戰火瀰漫的黃昏，
士官羅德利在荒野漫步，不經意聽到動人的歌聲，
原來是蘇格蘭格拉斯哥(Glasgow)公主愛蓮(Ellen)，
和著老臣貝恩的豎琴，向聖母禱告的聲音。
Ellen是《湖上美人》詩中的主角，為躲避國王的追捕，
她與父親藏身在湖邊洞穴中，走投無路，
唱出對聖母瑪利亞的祈禱。 曲子描繪少女祈禱時的純潔與虔誠，
代父贖罪並請求寬恕，包括包容、諒解與母愛。
因此，這首聖母頌，是為女高音獨唱而作，
以女聲演唱最能表達曲中的感情。
主要是摘錄新約聖經路加福音1:41-55的部分經文，
經文描述伊利莎白被聖靈充滿後，高聲向馬利亞呼喊：
「你是女子中最蒙福的；你所懷的胎兒也是蒙福的。」
馬利亞回應說：「因為他顧念他卑微的婢女。從今以後，
萬民將稱我有福。」也就是在這樣的背景下，
天主教會發展出信徒向聖母馬利亞懇求，
為信徒向耶穌代禱的傳統。
《Ave Maria》的拉丁文歌詞，
部分來自天主教徒對聖母馬利亞祈禱的
玫瑰經(AveMaria Gebet)。
「人們對於我在這首曲 Ave Maria 祈願的歌中所表現的虔誠之念，非常驚奇！這實在能給人留下深刻的印象，牽引人們的注意。
其理由在於何處？
據我想來，大概是因為我全心傾倒在真實虔誠之感情中的原因。」
